About Us
Recognized as North America’s foremost authority on natural and manufactured tiles, Stone Tile is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2012.
Founded nearly two decades ago by Sylvia Benchimol and architect Carl Hesse, Stone Tile has, over the ensuing years, become the leading distributor of porcelain, limestone, ceramic, travertine, slate and marble, as well as glass, mosaic and aluminum tiles. With over 160 employees, and offices and showrooms in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, and Montreal, Stone Tile is run by Ms. Benchimol and Daniel Sultan who have, with their strong team of employees, helped the company establish an international reputation for providing cutting-edge, design-forward material solutions to the A&D community (architects and designers) and discerning residential customers.
In 2011, Stone Tile introduced Wood by Stone Tile. Wood by Stone Tile features exclusive, finely crafted and chic hardwood flooring designs sourced from suppliers across the globe.
Sylvia Benchimol, Co-Founder and President
Sylvia Benchimol founded Stone Tile International in 1991. During the first four years, she juggled everything from making sales calls and sourcing materials to driving the forklift. Although Stone Tile has rapidly grown to include 160 employees and showrooms across Canada, Sylvia maintains an open-door policy and strives to remain approachable and engaged in day-to-day operations. She has earned herself a reputation among Stone Tile’s fashion-forward clientele for keeping a step ahead of the industry in foreseeing fashion trends, and was ranked #5 in the Profit W100 2009 “Canada’s top Women Entrepreneurs”.
Carl Hesse, Co-Founder and Artistic Director
As a Toronto architect, Carl Hesse lends his professional background in design and marketing expertise to create the cutting-edge Stone Tile product, marketing, and showroom environment that has become the talk of the design community. Distinguishing Stone Tile as a leader in the design industry, the ground-breaking gallery-like showrooms, inspire the imagination.
Vicky Baron, Vice President of Sales
One of Stone Tile’s intrepid pioneers, Vicky Baron joined the company in 1995 and has been instrumental in developing our highly-trained architectural sales forces in Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver and Montreal as well as the US department which she spearheaded. Vicky is in charge of business development and overseeing sales across North America. She enjoys traveling with her husband Michael and spending quality time with her sons Laurent, Marc and Julien.
Daniel Sultan, Director of Corporate Development
Daniel Sultan has become a second-generation star at Stone Tile, starting his career at just 14 years old as our youngest summer employee. Daniel graduated from the University of Toronto with an Honors BA in 2009, and has subsequently come on board full-time bringing a fresh and innovative approach to Stone Tile. In response to the company's rapid growth, Daniel initiated the new organizational function of Corporate Development as well as our expansion into wood. As Director of Corporate Development, he focuses on the development and implementation of new management systems, in addition to the assessment of opportunities for growth and investment.
